Play around. Mess about with your surfing, see what you can do and what you can teach yourself; snaps, floaters, tail slides... its an everyday board to enjoy as a step down for small, poor to good conditions

So this board has taken a long time to come together because... well, what if what comes out doesn't live up to the imagination?

MARTIAN draws elements from other boards brought into one model, my concern was what if they didn’t combine succesfully; like trying a new recipe if you try to use all your favourite ingredients only to find out they don’t work together (has anyone ever found a good recipe for a chocolate AND lemon cake?). The three boards MARTIAN takes characteristics from are Leaves, Louche and Freakuency.

Leaves; if the waves are steep and cranking but not big enough to ride defensively. The back third of MARTIAN has been left rounded with a refined tail-block.

MARTIAN is generously tail rockered although slightly less than Louche which is the most rockered shape. With these two boards, shedding some speed is preferable if it means having more control within the steep curl of a wave.

Forward of centre emulates the wave-catching Freakuency with its balance of a slightly thicker and wider planing surface under the chest for paddling and landing on and a confidence-inspiring nose rocker.

One prototype came close to the design brief which kept the development program alive, so I’d not blown it with the concept, just made it a little too low volume. Here is a lesson in getting the size of the board right for the rider: the more performance the board, the more critical the sizing.

All in all its been more than a 2 year project, 1 year researching carbon fibre and another of nervous procrastination which can be attributed to ehm… ‘development time’.

This model is a full carbon-fibre stringer-less Epoxy. MARTIAN is also available in EPS epoxy with a ply stringer.

You can do a Pepsi challenge by switching between carbon-fibre MARTIAN and an EPS Epoxy Ply stringer Leaves and feel what difference carbon-fibre makes to your surfing.

Use MARTIAN to learn new moves.
